This guide compares common support systems, from foam and latex to Bonnell and pocket springs, and explains key spring specifications such as wire diameter, spring turns and spring count to help you understand how each contributes to overall mattress support.


What Is a Mattress Support Layer?

We use the term support layer to describe the structural part of a mattress that helps support your body weight and maintain proper alignment while you sleep. This is different from mattress firmness, which describes how soft or hard the mattress feels at the surface.

Mattress Firmness

Mattress firmness refers primarily to how soft or hard the sleeping surface feels when you lie on it.

It is influenced mainly by the materials, thickness and construction of the comfort layers near the top of the mattress. These determine how much you sink into the mattress, how closely it contours around your body and how cushioned the surface feels.

Think of firmness as:

Mattress Support

Mattress support refers to how effectively the mattress carries your body weight and helps maintain a stable sleeping position.

A supportive mattress should respond to different parts of your body without allowing heavier areas to sink excessively. This helps with weight distribution and maintaining more consistent body and spinal alignment throughout the night.

How We Design Firmness & Support

At Cozylant, we treat comfort and support as two related but separate parts of mattress construction.

We use different combinations and thicknesses of materials such as foam, latex and 3D air fiber to create different firmness and cushioning levels. Underneath these materials, our hybrid mattresses use individual pocket springs to provide the main structural support.

This allows mattresses with different firmness levels to retain a strong underlying support system. The comfort layers determine how the mattress feels, while the springs provide structural push-back underneath the body.

Different Types of Mattress Support Systems

Pocket springs are only one way to build the support layer of a mattress. Depending on the mattress construction, the main support system may be made from foam, latex or springs, each with different characteristics.

Full Foam Support System

Full-foam mattresses use a thick layer of higher-density foam as their structural core instead of springs.

Foam can provide good body contouring and very low motion transfer, as there are no metal springs transferring movement across the mattress.

However, a large foam core generally allows less airflow than an open spring structure. Foam can also gradually soften through repeated compression and ageing, making foam density and quality particularly important when it supports the entire mattress.

Do We Use It?
No, not as our main support system. We use foam extensively within our comfort systems, but prefer individual pocket springs for the primary structural support of our hybrid mattresses.

Full Latex Support System

A full-latex mattress uses latex not only as a comfort material but also as the structural core of the mattress.

Latex is naturally resilient and responsive and buoyant, allowing it to compress under pressure before quickly returning to shape. Its structure can also provide relatively good airflow compared with many conventional foams.

A thick latex core, however, can make a mattress considerably heavier and more expensive. Latex can also gradually change as it ages through long-term exposure to oxygen, heat and environmental conditions.

Do We Use It?
No, not as our main support system. We prefer to use latex selectively as part of the comfort system, where its responsive cushioning can be combined with other materials. For the main support structure, we prefer pocket springs.

Spring Support System

Spring support systems use steel coils underneath the mattress comfort layers to carry body weight and provide structural push-back.

This construction is commonly found in hybrid mattresses, where materials such as foam, memory foam, latex or 3D Air Fiber provide surface comfort while the spring system underneath provides the main structural support.

The open space between the springs also allows more air to move through the mattress than in a completely solid foam core. With pocket springs, each spring can respond more independently to pressure while reducing movement between sleepers.

Do We Use It?
Yes. We use individual pocket springs as the primary support layer across our hybrid mattresses. This allows us to adjust comfort and firmness independently while retaining a strong underlying support system.

Types of Mattress Springs

Spring mattresses can use several different coil constructions. Two commonly encountered systems are Bonnell springs and pocket springs. The key difference is how the individual springs interact with one another.

Bonnell Springs

Bonnell springs are traditional hourglass-shaped steel coils connected by metal wires.

The connected spring structure creates a firm, stable feel and is generally more affordable to manufacture.

However, it offers less independent contouring and more motion transfer than pocket springs, and may become noisier over time.

Do We Use It?
No. We prefer individual pocket springs because independent spring movement provides better motion isolation and allows the support system to respond more precisely to different areas of the body.

Individual Pocket Springs

Pocket springs are steel coils that are individually enclosed in fabric pockets.

Each spring can compress more independently, allowing the mattress to contour more closely to the body and provide more targeted support.

They also offer better motion isolation and quieter movement than connected spring systems, but are generally more complex and expensive to manufacture.

Do We Use It?
Yes. We use pocket springs across our hybrid mattress range. We consider independent body support and motion isolation particularly important for comfortable sleep, especially when two people share the same mattress.

Understanding Pocket Spring Specifications

Not all pocket spring systems are constructed the same way. Their performance depends on several specifications working together, including spring wire diameter, spring dimensions, coil construction and spring count.

Spring Wire Diameter

Spring wire diameter refers to the thickness of the steel wire used to form each individual coil.

When other spring specifications remain similar, thicker steel wire generally requires more force to compress and offer better support.

1.8 - 1.9mm More flexible spring response

What Do We Use?
2.0mm or thicker. Across our mattresses, we use pocket springs with a wire diameter of at least 2.0mm for stronger structural support beneath the comfort layers.

Spring Turns

Spring turns refer to the number of complete coils or loops formed along the body of a spring.

The number of turns affects how the spring compresses and responds under pressure. More turns generally allow a more progressive and responsive compression.

6 turns. Our pocket springs use a six-turn construction, balancing compression, responsiveness and support.

Spring Count

Spring count refers to the number of individual pocket springs contained within the mattress.

When smaller springs are used, more individual coils can be fitted into the same mattress area. This can allow pressure to be distributed across more independent support points and potentially provide a more precise body response.
