Creating a sofa with removable covers involves additional steps compared to standard sofa. Fabrics must be carefully measured, cut, and stitched to match each cushion and frame component. Additionally, the cushions and frames need to be made in modular sections, making it simple to detach and reattach covers.

The mechanism for removable covers usually involves zippers, hidden along cushion edges or backrests, which allow the covers to be removed smoothly. Velcro or hook-and-loop strips may be used to secure frame covers, keeping them tight while still easy to remove. Foam or feather inserts are also placed inside zippered casings, so the inner filling stays intact while the outer fabric is removed.

Washable fabrics are specially designed to withstand repeated cleaning without losing their shape, colour, or texture. They are often pre-shrunk, treated, or woven in a way that minimizes fabric shrinkage and color fading when washed. These fabrics are ideal for removable cover sofas.

Standard fabrics, on the other hand, are not intended for washing. They may shrink, warp, or fade if exposed to water or cleaning detergents, so care is usually limited to spot cleaning or professional upholstery cleaning. While standard fabrics can offer a wide range of textures and patterns, they are less practical for sofas with removable covers that require frequent laundering.

Sofas with removable covers are convenient for cleaning, but the covers are more prone to shifting or loosening over time compared to sofas with fixed covers.

They are also slightly more expensive than standard sofas due to the additional steps required to create them.
