Sofa Bed vs Sofa: Firmer Feel You Should Know About
Many people expect a sofa bed to feel like a sofa — but this isn’t the case most of the time. A typical sofa has upwards of 10cm to 15cm of seat cushion foam thickness supported by a zigzag spring suspension underneath. This offers a medium-soft to medium-firm seat feel. In contrast, sofa beds must make room for the folding mechanism and 1 or 2 extra cushioning layer when the sofa bed is extended to bed mode. This leaves less room for thick seat cushion foams in sofa beds. Typically, seat cushion foams for sofa beds are around 8 to 10cm thick.
For metal-framed sofa beds options like Ciabatta, zigzag springs aren’t feasible too, resulting in a firmer, more structured seat. This makes such type of sofa beds best suited as sofa replacements only if you prefer a firmer sit. They are unable to rival sofas for use cases like movie nights or long periods of sitting.

Sofa Bed as a Permanent Bed? Think Twice
For daily sleep, mattresses outperform sofa beds — always. Mattresses are thicker, more supportive, and designed solely for sleep. Sofa beds, by design, compromise on foam thickness to allow for folding mechanisms, often making them less comfortable for long-term rest.
If you're thinking about getting a sofa bed to sleep on at night and retract into a sofa during the day to save space, think twice. While the idea of reclaiming floor space sounds practical, we believe the quality of sleep a proper mattress offers far outweighs the space you save when the sofa bed is folded away. Over time, compromised sleep can impact health and wellbeing — something a few extra square feet during the day can't replace.
Where Sofa Beds Truly Shine
Sofa beds deliver the most value when used as temporary comfort solutions. Many of our customers use them in study rooms for quick power naps, or as a last-minute sleeping option for guests staying over on short notice. In these roles, their compact form and dual functionality are true lifesavers.
They also work exceptionally well as accent chairs to complement your main sofa. You get the bonus of extra seating with the added flexibility of a fold-out bed when the occassion calls for it.
